The Historical Heritage of Banda Sea for Liveaboard Diving Destination

Table of Contents

Banda Neira is a small island surrounded by crystal-clear blue waters, featuring white-sand beaches and a cluster of beautiful islands. Within the waters of the Banda Sea that stretch all around – it lies an underwater paradise a dream destination for divers seeking both diving adventures and liveaboard expeditions as they navigate through the islands and encounter schools of pelagic fish at one of the best diving spots in the world: the Coral Triangle

The Coral Triangle is a global marine region that harbors the world’s greatest diversity of coral reefs and marine species, a place where pristine marine ecosystems blend with nutrient-rich currents, creating a home for millions of marine organisms and large schools of pelagic fish.

Diving in the Banda Sea offers divers the chance to encounter an incredible diversity of native marine life to these waters

1. Encounter Large Pelagic Species

  • Hammerhead Shark: From September through November is the best time to dive the Banda Sea, because dozens to hundreds of scalloped hammerhead sharks are often seen swimming together in large schools around seamounts or outlying islands such as Suanggi Island and Karang Hatta.
  • Mobula and Manta Rays: They are often seen swimming gracefully in formation as they cross strong currents along the underwater cliffs of Ai Island and Run Island during a Banda Sea liveaboard expedition.
  • Other Shark Species: Whitetip reef sharks, blacktip sharks, silvertip sharks, and even thresher sharks, which occasionally emerge from the depths.
  • Whales and Dolphins: The deep waters of the Banda Sea serve as a major migration route for large marine mammals such as sperm whales, blue whales, and pods of dolphins, which are often seen leaping near boats heading toward Banda Neira.

2. Iconic & Endemic Creatures

  • Banded Sea Krait (Laticauda colubrina): A signature species of marine life in the Banda Sea, especially around Manuk Island (called the “Volcano of the Snakes”), divers can encounter hundreds of venomous sea krait that are very docile and actively hunt among the crevices of the coral reefs.
  • Mandarin Fish (Synchiropus splendidus): These small fish with exotic, electric-colored patterns can be found at the pier or in the shallow waters of Banda Neira.

  • Macro Life: Pygmy seahorses hiding in gorgonian fans, various species of colorful nudibranchs (sea slugs), frogfish, and ghost pipefish.

1. Lava Flow (Banda Volcano)

One of the most iconic Banda Islands dive sites; following the 1988 eruption of Banda Volcano, the solidified lava flow on the seafloor is now completely covered by table coral and cabbage coral, which are growing at an extraordinary rate. The crystal-clear visibility makes this the best spot to encounter bumphead parrotfish and watch mandarin fish dance in the shallows.

2. Hatta Wall & Hatta Reef (Hatta Island)

Located at the eastern tip of the archipelago, Hatta Island is famous for its vertical cliffs that plunge into the abyssal depths. Hatta Wall offers an adrenaline-pumping drift dive experience among schools of dogtooth tuna and reef sharks. Meanwhile, at Karang Hatta an underwater mountain (seamount) divers have a great chance to witness schools of hammerhead sharks gathering at a cleaning station.

3. Batu Kapal

Located in the north of Banda Besar, this dive site is filled with a row of coral rocks jutting out at depth and is known for its fairly strong currents. These nutrient-rich currents attract large schools of pelagic fish, such as giant trevally, barracuda, and eagle rays, to hunt.

4. Ai Island and Run Island

Facing directly out to the open sea west of Banda Neira, the steep coral walls on both of these islands offer spectacular visibility. This is the best place to see schools of mobula rays gliding gracefully and thresher sharks that occasionally emerge from the deep sea.

5. Suanggi Island & Manuk Island (Outer Banda Liveaboard Route)

Suanggi Island is the prime spot for encountering massive schools of hammerhead sharks, while Manuk Island nicknamed the “Volcano of the Snakes” offers the rare thrill of diving among thousands of free-swimming sea snakes around an underwater volcano.
